Literature Text

Plot Summary: Facing his son's expulsion from school, recent widower, Benjamin Mee decides to begin a new life. To escape the sad reminders of his deceased wife, he buys a large house with a zoo in the backyard. Although reluctant to take on the zoo with all its animals - he decides to give it a try. His 7 year old daughter, Rosie, is happy with this, while his 14 year old son, Dylan, is the complete opposite.

My Opinion: I came into this, not hearing any reivews, not hearing the rating, or anything, and I have to say, I really loved this movie more than I thought I did. It's an amazing comedy-drama film, even though it's more drama than comedy. There are moments that are cute, and funny. It's almost like "Life: The movie", and I mean that in a good way. I highly recommend this movie, and I promise you this, you will cry, if not, feel like you want to.

What I didn't Like: At times the character, Dylan, was really annoying, and sometimes a total dick, but you learn to love him around the end.

Overall: It's a great family movie, it has great acting, the casting was fantastic, you had some fun characters that will make you smile. Definitely worth checking out.

Extras: Believe it or not, this was an Americanized film. The zoo in the film is called "Rosemoor Wildlife Park" and is situated in California. The real zoo is named "Dartmoor Zoological Park", which is located in Devon, England. However, the fictional Rosemoor Wildlife Park is closely based on Dartmoor Zoological Park. The original story was adapted for an American audience and the changes met with the approval of the author, Benjamin Mee.

There are several differences between the movie storyline and what happened in the real world. For example, Benjamin's wife, Katherine, died after they had bought the zoo and had moved in. In the film, she died before. Also, instead of an escaping bear, as portrayed by the film, it was a jaguar called Sovereign that had escaped. Additionally, Benjamin's children were much younger (aged four and six respectively) than the children in the film.

In the film, the zoo was a lot easier to buy. In real life, the zoo took almost two years to buy. Benjamin's first offer to buy the zoo was rejected due to his lack of experience in the zoological world.
My review of We Bought a Zoo.

I agree this was a really sweet film, and I definately cried several times lol (don't want to say when and ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it) I didn't realise it was based on a true story either, that just makes it even nicer, and I think it's cool that you included those true life commparisons in your review.

oh also I think the soundtrack by Jonsi is worth mentioning because it's really beautiful and adds a lot to the feel of the film I think :)
